Equatorial Guinea plans to register an application with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), a global coalition of governments, companies and civil societies working together to improve transparency and accountability in natural resources management.

To support its application, representatives from Equatorial Guinea’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, along with H.E. Ambassador Evuna Andeme, met with BG Group last Tuesday, 25 February to discuss a series of activities to support the country’s candidacy process. These activities include information seminars for civil society groups, private companies and the government in Equatorial Guinea. Three seminars will be held: ‘EITI – Who Are They?’, ‘Extractive Industries’ and ‘Civil Society and Its Role in the Implementation of the EITI Process.’

BG, which has been operating successfully in Equatorial Guinea for several years, has lent its support to Equatorial Guinea’s application. Michael Barron, Government and Public Affairs Manager at BG, said: “BG has supported the EITI initiative since its conception and continue to support the initiative around the world, wherever we have operations.”

Cesar H Inestrosa Gomez, leading the official delegation for Equatorial Guinea, added: “We are delighted to have met with BG, with whom we already have a good working relationship, to discuss our plans for the future in Equatorial Guinea and the importance of realising our goals of greater accountability and openness.”
