A delegation of professionals from the supervising ministry and the oil company, led by the Minister for Mines and the vice-president from Nobler Energy, Obiang Lima and Thor Pruckl respectively, went to Rebola to open this sociocultural centre.

The Cultural Centre is a space for recreation and study, and the opening ceremony featured various speeches, the cutting of a ceremonial ribbon, and a tour and inspection of the facilities.

Mbega Obiang Lima, in his address, praised the efforts and integrity of Noble Energy for honouring their commitment signed with the ministry, to work in the crude sector and invest in social projects.

The minister also revealed that through the refurbishment of this cultural complex, they were once again backing education and culture in the country: “Culture is the memory of the people, the collective consciousness of historical continuity, and the way of thinking and living. These words sum up all the hope that, like the Equatoguinean people in general, and those in the municipality of Rebola in particular, we all possess”.

Mbega Obiang also pointed out that: “We are a small country, humble, but with dreams that make us big and a benchmark in the world, above all in our sub-region, as the culture is a way of thinking and living. And as the memory of our people, culture brings everything together, and we must be proud of this, because as a nation, it is made up of moments and suffering.

But thanks to the policies of the President of the Republic, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, today we can boast of being the guarantors of a lasting peace and sustainable development, the reason why this cultural centre has to be a model for the Equatoguinean nation, directed towards young people and continuing to work in favour of the defence of all the good that helps us to steer our nation”.

The vice-president of Noble Energy congratulated the Government in general, and the Ministry for Mines in particular, for the previously signed agreements that are now bearing fruit. Proof of this are the large sociocultural projects that are being carried out throughout national territory, together with partners such as Gepetrol, Glencore, NPL and PA Resources, among others.

The Secretary of State at the Ministry for Culture and Craft Promotion, José Antonio Ondo Abeso, and the first deputy director general of Gepetrol, Vicente Abeso Mbuy, also spoke at the ceremony.

“The State has the duty to educate its citizens. Pain will be felt after the goodbyes to friends, boyfriends, girlfriends and families that will take place during these days, and with the passage of time one comes empty-handed”; thus began Osa Osa Ecoro, recommending responsibility to the students, specifically 25, 17 boys and 8 girls, who had previously taken the relevant exams in order to be worthy of the university grants.

In his farewell, Osa Osa Ecoro reminded them of the promise they must keep with the country, in order to take advantage of the opportunity provided for them, as these grants are granted by the party through the good relations it maintains with other nations. The young people responded by committing themselves to facing the new challenge, and to returning as qualified professionals.

“My colleagues and I are committed to doing our best, in order to raise Equatorial Guinea with respect to education. We want them to know that we, the Equatoguineans, can give everything, that we are worth it”, assured one of the students.

The General Secretary concluded the meeting by announcing the creation of a web page, which will serve as a link between the coordination of PDGE grants and the students, in order to understand their needs, and resolve any problems they may have in their various destinations.

Juan Carlos Ondo Angue, President of the Supreme Court of Justice, took part in the debating tables at the Spanish Supreme Court, also attended by the Presidents of the European Supreme Courts, where they debated their role in the development of the Law, and on alternative methods for resolving litigation, such as mediation and arbitration.

The president of the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary in Spain, Carlos Lesmes, underlined in his opening speech the crucial role that judicial bodies must play “when facing the challenges presented within the current context of socio-political globalisation”.

Lesmes opened, together with the president of the Network and the Irish Supreme Court, Susan Denham, the symposium which the European organisation held on Friday 21st October, in which ‘Brexit’, the refugee crisis, and Islamist terrorism, were presented as some of the challenges that will face Europe over the coming years.

For her part, the president of the Network of Presidents of the European Supreme Courts, Susan Denham, indicated that “the independence of the judicial system is not a privilege of the judges, but a guarantee of the human rights of the population”.

The day developed through two debating tables, the first dedicated to “Alternative methods fro resolving litigation; mediation and arbitration”, with an introductory speech from the vice-president of the Network and president of the German Federal Court, Bettina Limperg. The second dealt with “The role of the Supreme Courts in the development of Law”, with an opening speech by the president of the Low Countries Supreme Court, Maarten Feteris.

The prominent presence of Juan Carlos Ondo Angue at the debating tables and at the symposium of the Network of Supreme Court Presidents from the EU, highlighted the excellent relations that the institution he oversees maintains with the Supreme Court and the General Council and the General Council of the Judiciary in Spain, and the European Supreme Courts.

Also accompanying the President of the Equatorial Guinea Supreme Court of Justice at the symposium was the magistrate, Antonio Ntutumu Nkulu.
