Health NGO discusses important work in Equatorial Guinea

Marciana Avomo Nsue Oyana, President and founder of the Women’s Association in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS (AMUSIDA), works in the control and prevention of the disease in Equatorial Guinea and Africa more widely. A National Conference on Youth and HIV/AIDS took place in Sipopo in June, sponsored by the president and bringing together specialists in the field as well as medical students learning more about the disease.

She discussed the efforts of the Equatorial Guinean government in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDs:

‘In Equatorial Guinea, the government provides and funds 100% the antiretroviral drugs, which are acquired free in the reference units of infectious diseases created so far, but with the project of decentralization in four provincial hospitals, and it is clearly a very important step and an indirect measure of prevention. But we believe the prevention activities are equally important, which will ultimately avoid infection and, therefore, avoid the increase of people who are infected and decrease the cost that this implies.’

President Obiang visits construction at the Library of Bata

President_Obiang_visitsOn Tuesday, President Obiang visited the future Public Library of Bata, which is currently under construction. He was met by the Delegate Minister of Culture and Tourism, Guillermina Mekuy Mba Obono and Roher Pereira, director of Pac Internacional.

The library began construction in 2008 and is expected to be completed this year. It will include a virtual library, reading and communication rooms, cinema, supermarket and boutique shops.

Civil servants complete training course in Bata

Civil servants in Bata have completed a training course in public service, supported by the National University of Equatorial Guinea. The closing ceremony of the course was hosted by Delegate Minister for Public Service and Administrative Coordination, Baltasar Esono Eworo Nfono. The two-week training course taught civil servants the tools and theory of effective management and administration.

The Delegate Minister announced that the Department for Public Service and Administrative Coordination plans to open further training centres for civil servants, with the possibility of study visits to China and Brazil. Equatorial Guinea has recently signed cooperation agreements with several countries, opening up the possibility of education partnerships.

Government donates medical supplies to Malabo hospitals

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is delivering medical supplies to various hospitals in Malabo, including medicines, beds, mattresses, gloves and condoms. The government has also donated 56,700 condoms to the public to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Equatorial Guinea appointed chair of African states to UN

From 1 August 2013, Equatorial Guinea assumes Presidency of African Ambassadors to the UN for one month. Throughout August, Ambassador Anatolio Ndong Mba will chair the group’s meetings and act as spokesperson in all events and sessions at the General Assembly of the UN.
