The President and First Lady attended the opening ceremony for a new hotel in Akoakam last Thursday. The Provincial Delegate of Culture and Tourism also attended the ceremony and called on the hotel to recruit graduates from the Mongomo Hotel Management School.

Akoakam Esangui is the hometown of the President. The hotel has 4 floors, 30 rooms, 3 offices, a reception area, industrial kitchen, 2 restaurants, a modern disco and a car park. First Lady Constancia Mangue de Obiang cut the ribbon to signal the official opening of the hotel.

The Foundation for the Development of Nursing (FUDEN) has seen the completion of the first phase of its project in Equatorial Guinea with the graduation of 153 nurses and midwives trained by the organisation. The training was carried out in partnership with the National University of Equatorial Guinea and the School of Health and Environment, part of an initiative which dates back to 2008.

The new nurses and midwives will take on managerial responsibility in hospitals and health centres across the country. The project has been funded exclusively by the government of Equatorial Guinea to improve the education and experience of health professionals in the country.

Vuk Jeremic, President of the UN General Assembly, visited Equatorial Guinea this week for a courtesy meeting with President Obiang Nguema Mbasago. He also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Agapito Mba Mokuy and Equatorial Guinea’s Permanent Ambassador to the UN, Anatolio Ndong Mba.

Vuk Jeremic said of the meeting:

‘I took the opportunity of this meeting to express my congratulations to the President for the development that has been experienced in Equatorial Guinea. This development deserves the support of the United Nations.’

The Administrative Council for the National Centre for the Informatisation of Public Administration met at the Presidency headquarters this week to discuss the digitalisation of public administration in the country. The meeting aims to streamline this process and find technical assistance and support for the project.

President Obiang met with the heads of the Municipal Governments of Bioko Norte and Bioko Sur on Monday to discuss their performance and issues around municipal governments, especially in sanitation, tax and housing. The President urged Municipal Governments to organise training seminars and working visits to other countries to improve their knowledge and experience on the smooth running of cities.

The First Deputy Secretary-General of the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea for Administrative Affairs, Maria Teresa Efua Esangono, has been appointed as the new President of the Senate. She said:

‘When I heard the news I was overcome with emotion. First, I would like to show my gratitude to the President of the Republic, H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo for the appointment. And also, for the fact that he has trained a group of women and men for the future of the country, and I am one of them. And we have been trained, both in terms of knowledge, as well as political tasks, in his work to raise the country.’

On Tuesday, the Minister of Information, Press and Radio, Agustin Nze Nfumu, met with the Ambassador for the US in Equatorial Guinea, Mark L Asquino, to discuss plans to teach the public English through radio and television.

A potential cooperation agreement between Equatorial Guinea and the US channel Voice of America was also discussed, with proposed plans to train Equatorial Guinean staff in audio-visual media.

Director General of Human Rights of the Government Presidency, Manuel Mba Nchama, represented Equatorial Guinea at the International Conference on Human Rights, held in The Hague from 7 to 10 July. The meeting was attended by member countries of the UN, with the support of the Dutch government, in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

During the Conference, issues regarding discrimination and violence against women, reproductive health and rights of the disabled were discussed.
