The President and First Lady attended the opening ceremony for a new hotel in Akoakam last Thursday. The Provincial Delegate of Culture and Tourism also attended the ceremony and called on the hotel to recruit graduates from the Mongomo Hotel Management School.

Akoakam Esangui is the hometown of the President. The hotel has 4 floors, 30 rooms, 3 offices, a reception area, industrial kitchen, 2 restaurants, a modern disco and a car park. First Lady Constancia Mangue de Obiang cut the ribbon to signal the official opening of the hotel.

More nurses and midwives for Equatorial Guinea

The Foundation for the Development of Nursing (FUDEN) has seen the completion of the first phase of its project in Equatorial Guinea with the graduation of 153 nurses and midwives trained by the organisation. The training was carried out in partnership with the National University of Equatorial Guinea and the School of Health and Environment, part of an initiative which dates back to 2008.

The new nurses and midwives will take on managerial responsibility in hospitals and health centres across the country. The project has been funded exclusively by the government of Equatorial Guinea to improve the education and experience of health professionals in the country.

President of the UN General Assembly visits Equatorial Guinea

un_picVuk Jeremic, President of the UN General Assembly, visited Equatorial Guinea this week for a courtesy meeting with President Obiang Nguema Mbasago. He also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Agapito Mba Mokuy and Equatorial Guinea’s Permanent Ambassador to the UN, Anatolio Ndong Mba.

Vuk Jeremic said of the meeting:

‘I took the opportunity of this meeting to express my congratulations to the President for the development that has been experienced in Equatorial Guinea. This development deserves the support of the United Nations.’

The meeting aims to streamline this process and find technical assistance and support for the project.

President meets with City Halls in Bioko

President Obiang met with the heads of the Municipal Governments of Bioko Norte and Bioko Sur on Monday to discuss their performance and issues around municipal governments, especially in sanitation, tax and housing. The President urged Municipal Governments to organise training seminars and working visits to other countries to improve their knowledge and experience on the smooth running of cities.

The First Deputy Secretary-General of the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea for Administrative Affairs, Maria Teresa Efua Esangono, has been appointed as the new President of the Senate. She said:

‘When I heard the news I was overcome with emotion. First, I would like to show my gratitude to the President of the Republic, H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo for the appointment. And also, for the fact that he has trained a group of women and men for the future of the country, and I am one of them. And we have been trained, both in terms of knowledge, as well as political tasks, in his work to raise the country.’

Minister of Information meets with the US Ambassador

On Tuesday, the Minister of Information, Press and Radio, Agustin Nze Nfumu, met with the Ambassador for the US in Equatorial Guinea, Mark L Asquino, to discuss plans to teach the public English through radio and television.

A potential cooperation agreement between Equatorial Guinea and the US channel Voice of America was also discussed, with proposed plans to train Equatorial Guinean staff in audio-visual media.

Minister of Foreign Affairs meets with Embassy of Spain

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Agapito Mba Mokuy, met with the counsellor of the Spanish Embassy, Diego Martinez Belio to discuss bilateral issues between the two countries. The upcoming arrival of the new Spanish Ambassador is being seen as an opportunity to strengthen and improve relations between the two countries.

Diego Martinez Belio also discussed the visa process for travellers wishing to visit Spain:

‘In the vacation season there is a higher number of demands for visas, and Embassy resources are insufficient for this increased demand. The visa approval rate is over ninety percent, the highest in the world, which makes it difficult to cope with the demand. For example, in January we granted about three hundred visas and in August it reaches a thousand. The workload is multiplied by three, so the process is a little longer.’

African Union holds summit on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria

An African Union summit on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria was held in Nigeria this week, attended by the President of Equatorial Guinea. The summit discussed government investment in the fight against disease, as well as maternal and infant health and the progress of the Millennium Development Goals across the continent.

HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria continue to be the leading causes of death and illness across Africa and remain a threat to socio-economic development in the continent. African leaders attending the summit have pledged to eradicate these three diseases, taking measures in their countries to stop and reverse the spread of lethal illness.

During the summit, President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo presented Equatorial Guinea’s efforts to fight disease, including the distribution of antiretrovirals and mosquito nets and spraying in all national housing.

Equatorial Guinea attends International Conference on Human Rights

Director General of Human Rights of the Government Presidency, Manuel Mba Nchama, represented Equatorial Guinea at the International Conference on Human Rights, held in The Hague from 7 to 10 July. The meeting was attended by member countries of the UN, with the support of the Dutch government, in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

During the Conference, issues regarding discrimination and violence against women, reproductive health and rights of the disabled were discussed.
