African Union Observer Mission accepts election results

The African Union Observer Mission has held a press conference in Malabo, confirming their satisfaction with the results of the elections held on 26 May, in which PDGE remains as the ruling party.

The Observers emphasised the peaceful atmosphere in which the elections took place, and urged the acceptance of the results. A total of 40 Observers from various African countries were in attendance, including representatives from Algeria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Congo, Ivory Coast, Dijbouti, Ethiopia and Ghana.

Equatorial Guinea is to hold legislative and municipal elections of 26 May. For the first time, voters will elect 55 members of the 70-seat Senate, which was established under recent revisions to the constitution. The remaining 15 senators will be appointed by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema.

The ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea, known as PDGE, together with a coalition of three smaller partiers, won the last legislative elections in 2008 with 99 out of 100 seats.

The Secretary-General of the PDGE, Lucas Nguema Esono, said yesterday that preparations for the elections were being ‘carried out in a good atmosphere’. The African Union has sent 40 observers to monitor the elections.
